Best Practice Guidance for Supporting National Criminal Accountability Mechanisms
Since 2021, Global Rights Compliance (GRC) has been contracted by the UN Department of Peace Operations’ (DPO) Justice and Corrections Service (JCS) within the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions to develop best practice guidance on supporting national criminal accountability mechanisms investigating, prosecuting and adjudicating conflict-related crimes.
This work is designed to strengthen the UN’s ability to assist host authorities in holding perpetrators accountable for crimes that fuel conflict, including conflict-related sexual violence, terrorism, and transnational organised crime.
Our Services and Activities
- GRC is conducting in-depth qualitative research, including interviews with practitioners and experts in countries such as South Sudan, the Central African Republic, Mali, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
- The resulting outputs will include lessons learned, study and best practice guidance for UN field practitioners.
- These tools aim to improve the effectiveness of DPO and other UN institutions in supporting national justice processes. Also, it will strengthen national systems’ ability to prosecute conflict-fuelling crimes and deliver credible accountability
Partners
GRC is working in close coordination with the Justice and Corrections Service (JCS) and key stakeholders in the target countries, including: Investigators, Prosecutors, Judges, Victims’ representatives, Defence counsel (where appropriate). The initiative is supported by an Advisory Group of experts in conflict-related justice and accountability mechanisms.
