Wayne Jordash KC on Ukraine’s War Crimes Prosecution: Insights on Justice, Challenges, and Hope

As Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine enters its fourth year, the country’s quest for justice continues to unfold behind the scenes – in courtrooms, forensic laboratories, and within a rapidly evolving legal system. Wayne Jordash KC, a leading human rights lawyer and a central figure in shaping the strategy of war crimes prosecutions in Ukraine, president of Global Rights Compliance, shares his insights into this complex process in an in-depth interview for The New Voice of Ukraine.

Wayne reflects on the significant transformation of prosecutorial efforts in Ukraine since 2022, emphasising the dedication of lawyers working in difficult conditions to document atrocities and build compelling cases. He also discusses the challenges posed by Russian disinformation campaigns and the disturbing phenomenon of sham trials of Ukrainian prisoners of war, which are themselves a gross violation of international law.

The interview sheds light on the balance between political realities and legal aspirations, noting the limitations of international tribunals and emphasising the importance of cooperation between the Ukrainian authorities and global partners. Despite the many obstacles, Wayne finds cautious optimism in the resilience of civil society, both in Ukraine and abroad, as a powerful force to resist authoritarianism and demand accountability.

This conversation offers a clear and timely overview of the challenges involved in pursuing justice and upholding the rule of law in the context of the war in Ukraine.
