Seeking Creative Accountability Pathways for North Korean Human Rights: Documenting Violations and Mapping the Chain of Command

Global Rights Compliance (GRC) and the Transitional Justice Working Group (TJWG) are honoured to invite you to a pivotal side-event, supported by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED). This event is a part of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute’s 22nd Session, focusing on the grave human rights situation in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

The event, titled “Seeking Creative Accountability Pathways for North Korean Human Rights: Documenting Violations and Mapping the Chain of Command”, is co-sponsored by the Republic of Korea and the Permanent Mission of Canada to the United Nations. It aims to shed light on crimes against humanity and other serious human rights abuses in North Korea.

  • Kim Kyu Li, North Korean defector and advocate
  • Moderated by Catriona Murdoch, Partner and DPRK Lead at GRC
    Ms. Kim Lyu Li will share the plight of her sister, one of the 500 detainees repatriated to North Korea by China. TJWG will present their extensive research, including interviews with over 800 North Korean defectors, shedding light on public executions, abductions, and disappearances orchestrated by the North Korean regime. This event is not just an assembly of voices but a call to action, aiming to broaden the scope of advocacy for North Korean human rights. We seek to galvanise support for justice and accountability pathways and explore the complex parameters of these crimes.
