Utilising the PEACE Model: Empowering the Ombudsman Office

GRC has delivered a training session on the PEACE model interview techniques for the Ombudsman Office. The PEACE model, renowned for its systematic approach to investigative interviews, equips our officials with the tools to conduct fair and thorough interviews, ensuring procedural integrity and accountability.

The PEACE model, recognised globally for its structured approach to interviews, stands as a cornerstone in encouraging fairness and reliability throughout investigative processes and which, in the case of the Ombudsman Office, involves monitors gathering accurate information on human rights violations from IDPs of formerly temporarily occupied territories. Developed to enhance the quality of information obtained during interviews, the model emphasizes preparation, respect and rapport building and systematic open questioning techniques.

“Our commitment extends beyond theoretical knowledge to practical skills that make a tangible difference in how interviews are conducted.”- James Hyatt, Team Lead for MJT South GRC.

The feedback from participants underscored the training’s effectiveness in enhancing their understanding and application of the PEACE model. Many expressed confidence in its ability to facilitate effective interviews, improve information gathering, and ultimately strengthen the credibility of the reporting of human rights violations.

The Mobile Justice Teams of GRC operate as part of Atrocity Crimes Advisory Group (ACA Group), initiated by the US, EU and UK governments to help Ukraine in bringing to justice those responsible for crimes committed during Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine.
